The meaning of life |
Since the dawn of time, the ultimate question has been asked in a number of ways. Why do we exist? What is the meaning of life? Does God exist? What is the origin of the universe? How does the world exist, and what is its origin or source of creation? Why is there something rather than nothing?
This site offers you the possibility to discuss this fundamental metaphysical question with others. It also allows you to share your opinion and react to other people's points of view. What do you believe in? What do you think is the meaning of life?
I wrote this 2 years ago, I think it could help someone.
I started to understand the meaning of life while I was unemployed and living at home earlier in my life. And I will tell you what the meaning of life is, but to understand it we must first understand the meaning of death. If you fear death, I think I can help you with that by writing this.
Why do we die?
Some might say it's because of biological reasons, we're not evolved enough yet, we haven't adapted to living forever through evolution yet. Others may say it's because god made us that way.
What happens with us after we're dead is not relevant to my theory so it doesn't matter if you think you'll be swirling in eternal darkness or end up in heaven or hell.
But I want to keep this simple and easy to understand, so Why do we die? To answer this question you must ask yourself what would it be like to never die? To be immortal.
At first you might think it is awesome especially if EVERYONE was immortal then we could all dance around being happy forever. Maybe even young forever!
But okay lets ignore the facts that if everyone was immortal, didn't need to eat either obviously because then animals probably would be immortal too. I can't begin to explain the problems with that just now but if evolution is correct that would mean we wouldn't exist in the first place because survival of the fittest wouldn't apply. Even if we were to exist due to Gods loving hand our earth would be so overpopulated by now, that people would basically be piling up on each other. And if people were immortal and couldn't get children none of us would be here today anyway.
But lets ignore those things and think about what it would be like if only you were immortal. Now that'd be something right? You can live forever! Do everything, SEE everything, nothing is impossible for you, except for dying of course.
Maybe if you're a great enthusiast of life it would be awesome for a couple of hundred, or thousands of years, maybe even longer than that.
But as the sun explodes and our solar system dies or when the universe implodes, which is in such a long future you can't even begin to imagine it, you will start to get really, really, REALLY bored. Believe me. You think it sucks to stare into a wall for too long? Try staring into the creation of space and time over billions of years. You would most probably end up swirling somewhere around space until you get sucked into a star, due to gravity, where you'd have to spend the rest of that universes lifetime waiting for a new chance to end up on a life supporting planet. Now that's what i'd call a purgatory.
I think it is easy to say that if you or everyone were immortal it would be way too complicated and boring and actually useless.
Life is a blessing, but only because of death, it makes us take chances and value the time we have, it makes us want to experience things before it's too late, at least this applies to alot of people. Not to suicidal's though.
So now when we understand why death is a blessing what is the point in living at all if we're just gonna be around here for a moment in time?
Especially if you're not happy with life, why should you continue to live? WHAT IS THE REASON, WHY AM I HERE?
Some might say the reason we live is to have kids. Some might say it's all based on chance that life even existed and there is no reason to live.
Others might think that it's because we are being tested until we end up in heaven or hell - Which is ironic if you just read about what it would be like to live forever, unless, in heaven, there is an offswitch to kill yourself.
Anyway no.
What is the meaning of life?
The answer is simple but also hard.
The meaning of life is to live forever.
If you look at time and your life as a part of a chain or pattern that will continue to evolve after your death you can begin to see that your life is crucial to the patterns outcome. But only if you manage to affect the pattern enough, because otherwise your existence will be a mere sidenote in a neverending stream. Your existence will be like a small branch on an eternal and endlessly tall tree.
The meaning of life is to live, just look at your instincts and urges, you want to eat, sleep, drink, fuck. All you want to do is to live and reproduce. And please don't think you're right because you thought the meaning of life is to have kids, have you thought about all the people who are sterile or too old to have more kids? Should they just go fuck themselves? No, the meaning of life is not necessarily to have kids. Sure your kids might bring your genetic pool forth a couple generations of maybe a thousand years and it will create a couple of branches on the endless tree. But to "win" you want to have the biggest effect on this timeline and there is alot of ways to leave something behind apart from having kids.
You can make a vital discovery, you can invent something, you can affect other people who will make a vital discovery or invent something useful. Once again, karma comes in. Because if you can affect people in a positive manner so that it through some deterministic manner helps them to change the outcome of the future your life was meaningful (obviously the same could apply if you affect someone in a negative manner, but lets not be too pessimistic). Where would our civilisation be today if no one created the first language, or writing, or mathematics, or the iPad. Right?
The meaning of life is to leave something behind and if you are not interested in doing so then you will have to find meaning IN life instead.
What I wrote here is not necessarily an universal truth but it makes sense in my mind and might do the same in yours.
So I hope, that I at least can help someone to stop being afraid of death, or stop looking at their existence as useless
